Laser Skin Resurfacing Memphis
Laser resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure that makes use of laser energy for improving the appearance of your skin. It is used to treat facial flaws such as acne, wrinkles, fine lines, and scars.
Certain resurfacing lasers are best for addressing scars, wrinkles, warts, and other similar conditions. Others are most effective for eliminating superficial and minor/moderate deep lines visible on the hands, face, chest and neck.
How It Works
The technique used in laser resurfacing involves directing short concentrated pulses of laser energy at irregular skin surfaces. The objective is to accurately remove different layers of the skin, making way for fresh new skin to grow.
Laser resurfacing makes use of a precise targeted approach, and only the outer layer of the skin is removed. This outer layer is called the epidermis. The skin layer beneath the epidermis is known as the dermis, and during treatment, it is heated. This helps in stimulating the production of fresh collagen fibers. The result is after the treatment, patients get firmer and smoother skin as the treatment area gradually heals.
Here are some of the common skin conditions that can be addressed with the help of laser skin resurfacing:
- Acne scars
- Other scars
- Sagging skin
- Age spots
- Droopy eyelids
- Crow’s feet
- Sun-damaged skin
The Treatment Process
The laser resurfacing procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis and does not require an overnight stay. Treatment can be performed on the individual wrinkles around the mouth, eyes, or forehead, or on the entire face.
When addressing smaller areas, local anesthetic will be used on these regions first to make them numb. At times, a doctor may also decide to provide IV sedation to further reduce discomfort. General anesthesia may be given when the entire face is under treatment.
While a complete face treatment may take close to two hours, individual regions may be treated within 30 to 45 minutes.
Recovery and Care
You will be required to follow a proper recovery routine after your laser resurfacing session in order to ensure optimal healing and results. The treated areas will have to be cleaned two to five times every day using diluted vinegar solution or saline, as per your surgeon’s instructions.
Your doctor will prescribe the application of certain protective skincare ointments or products for healing. Depending on the instructions of your plastic surgeon, you may apply liberal amounts of skin moisturizer every day on the new skin.
Once healing takes place, you will need to apply a good-quality sunscreen, one which is especially made for sensitive rejuvenated facial skin. It is best to use the sunscreen recommended by your plastic surgeon for protecting the treated areas.
