What is Bone Grafting?

Over time, tooth loss or periodontal (gum) disease may cause nearby bone to recede or deteriorate. Bone grafting offered by Dr. Williams is used to replace bone in the jaw and minimize gum and bone collapse.

Bone grafting is often associated with dental restoration procedures such as dental implants. If the jawbone has sustained significant damage, bone grafting can be used to create a solid base for dental implants.

The Procedure

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM BONE GRAFTING?

In the past, patients with insufficient bone structure were not candidates for dental implants. With current bone graft techniques, surgeons now have the ability to grow bone on the upper and lower jaws.

You may be a potential candidate if:

  • You have bone loss due periodontal disease, extraction or injury
  • You do not have sufficient bone required for dental implants
  • You wish to restore function and aesthetic appearance to your teeth

Bone grafting can replace or correct missing bone, giving your surgeon the opportunity to place dental implants. For those affected by periodontal disease, bone grafting can improve your oral health by increasing the strength and stability of your jaw.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR SURGERY

Bone grafting material is typically harvested from one part of your body and transplanted to the treatment area. Alternatively, bone graft material may come from human cadaver, bovine (cow) or synthetic sources. The bone graft material will be anchored in place using small titanium screws. Your surgeon will then place a barrier membrane made from human or bovine sources to stabilize the graft.

AFTER YOUR BONE GRAFT SURGERY

Most patients experience some swelling and discomfort following surgery. A soft food diet will be recommended during recovery. The recovery time after grafting will depend on the type of graft performed. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within a couple days. Full healing may take 6-12 months. Dental implants can only be inserted when the healing process is complete.

UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS OF BONE GRAFT SURGERY

All surgical procedures, including bone grafting, present a degree of risk. These risks will be discussed in depth during the consultation process. Some risks may include bleeding, infection, adverse reaction to anesthesia, scarring and extended healing.
