What is Oral and Facial pathology?

The face is one of the most dynamic regions of the body, making it more vulnerable to benign or malignant disease. Oral and Facial pathology offered by Dr. Micheal Williams involves the diagnosis and treatment of serious dental and facial diseases.

Unusual changes to the face, neck or mouth may be the beginning of pathological disease. Early detection and treatment is essential to promoting long-term health.

The Procedure

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM FACIAL PATHOLOGY TREATMENT

Anyone who is experiencing abnormal changes to their face, neck or mouth may benefit from oral and facial pathology services. One or more of the following may indicate the beginning of a pathological process:

  • Facial sores that bleed easily and do not heal
  • Reddish or whitish patches in the mouth
  • Lumps on the inside of the mouth
  • Trouble swallowing or chewing
  • Frequent sore throat or hoarseness
  • A mass or lump in the neck

Tobacco use, poor facial hygiene, poor nutrition and some infections may increase your risk of disease. Facial pathology services can be used for early detection, which is critical to successful treatment.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING YOUR TREATMENT

A number of exams and diagnostic tests may be conducted to determine the cause of your symptoms. A biopsy is almost always performed to investigate suspicious tissue. During a biopsy, a portion of the tissue is removed and sent to a pathology laboratory for microscopic analysis.

The results from your biopsy report will allow your doctor to establish a diagnosis and devise an appropriate treatment plan. Medical and/or surgical intervention may be necessary.

AFTER YOUR FACIAL PATHOLOGY TREATMENT

Recovery will depend on the extent of your diagnosis and treatment. You will be monitored closely during the first several days and weeks of recovery to ensure proper healing. Following recovery, it is recommended that you complete monthly self exams. If you are at a high risk for facial cancer, you should also see your dentist or surgeon for annual check ups.

UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS OF FACIAL PATHOLOGY TREATMENT

The risks associated with your treatment will vary depending on your diagnosis and individualized treatment plan. All risks will be discussed in depth during the consultation process.
